At the SCO summit, PM Shahbaz raises terrorism concerns while urging global engagement with the Afghan government.
Prime Minister Shahbaz's official trip to Astana, Kazakhstan, for the SCO meetings marked a pivotal occasion. He stressed the necessity of constructive interaction with the Afghan government to tackle their economic and developmental requirements.

Additionally, he advocated for the promotion of national currencies in regional trade settlements to mitigate the impact of global financial disruptions.
The prime minister pledged that Pakistan would do “its utmost to provide impetus to collective efforts to raise living standards in the SCO region,” citing the rise in political and military conflicts worldwide and the consequent hike in food and fuel prices which have “seriously affected members’ ability to address poverty.”
PM Shahbaz Suggests Putin Renew Trade Under Barter System
On Wednesday, in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the premier called for overcoming financial and banking issues between the two countries by renewing and expanding trade under a barter system.
Recalling how Pakistan and Russia used to have bilateral trade and a barter system in the 1950s and 1960s, PM Shahbaz said, “I think today is the time we can overcome financial and other banking issues by renewing our trade and expanding our trade under a barter. That will be very beneficial to Pakistan and we will be able to overcome many problems.”
President Putin noted that Pakistan and Russia enjoyed cordial relations, which had improved due to trade linkages. He expressed readiness to enhance cooperation with Pakistan in energy and agriculture and to promote cooperation in the field of food security.
Tripartite Mechanisms
PM Shahbaz also proposed establishing tripartite institutional mechanisms, particularly in economic and investment areas, to strengthen Pakistan-Turkish-Azerbaijan economic and commercial cooperation.
During the inaugural session of the Pakistan-Turkish-Azerbaijan Trilateral Summit held on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, he underscored that Pakistan deeply values its fraternal ties with Azerbaijan and Turkiye, based on mutual respect and support for each other on core issues
